Bertolt Brecht · The Good Woman of Setzuan poster

Byrd’s 1970 poster for Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Woman of Setzuan at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater — Repertory Theater under Jules Irving.

Byrd’s poster for the 1970 production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Woman of Setzuan, by the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center, was deliberately sparse.

He designed the title type “to be like a cloud that the plane flew under.”

Byrd remembers appreciating the design at the time, hating it for many years after, and coming full circle to love it again.

The sheet announces the November 5, 1970 opening at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, in a new translation by Ralph Manheim.
